Affordable Housing

Elect Sheila Gilmour Mayor of Greenfield, MA.

Nearly every community in the country is plagued by insufficient affordable housing options. Some communities have taken a proactive approach by implementing creative solutions to help alleviate this problem – solutions we can adapt to our needs and implement here in Greenfield. We can create more affordable housing options by:

  • Incentivizing density and supporting tiny houses, co-housing, and cottage housing models
  • Removing barriers to accessible, affordable housing in the zoning ordinance
  • Reducing minimum lot sizes for new residential development
  • Offering incentives for Greenfield residents to create more affordable housing
  • Working with local non-profits to build permanent affordable housing on city-owned land

Homelessness is a growing problem in America and while there are no easy solutions, we must take decisive steps to reduce chronic homelessness in our community. We can begin to address this issue by:

  • Ensuring that transitional housing is located near critical resources including public transportation, shopping, and medical facilities
  • Continuing to work closely with social service providers who support homeless and housing-insecure individuals
  • Creating a pipeline from transitional housing into stable, permanent housing
